20 Books Recommended by Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling is the best. She’s funny, talented, and… an avid reader. I’ve been following her on social media for some time, but it wasn’t until I found this article that I realized just how many book recommendations she sneaks into her posts!

I love finding new recommendations for my to-read pile, but it’s even better when it’s from our girl Mindy.

She’s recommended some pretty good reads that feel like they were cherry-picked from Mindy Lahiri‘s personal bookshelf: a little bit of romance, a little bit of comedy, and a little bit of quirk. Here are some of her book picks: Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen), Modern Romance (Aziz Ansari), In Other Words (Jhumpa Lahiri), The Year of Yes (Shonda Rhimes).

What’s your favorite book on Mindy’s list?

Weekend Reading

This has been kind of a weird week in terms of pacing. Sometimes it felt like the days were flying by, and other times… not so much. I’m just glad that it’s finally Friday!

My office is closed on Monday in observance of President’s Day, so it’s super exciting to have a long weekend and to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Sunday night (and not worry about waking up early for work the next day!). Gavin is taking me to see The Grand Paradise, an immersive theater experience in Brooklyn. It just got a rave review in the New York Times, and it’s from the same company that produced the amazing Alice In Wonderland-themed immersive show Then She Fell (which we saw two summers ago).

Needless to say, it’s going to be be a fun weekend!

Here’s what I’m reading this week:

How to Read 100 Books a Year

Recipe: Creamy Hot Buttered Rum

Nice Women Finish First When They Ask the Right Questions

The Pursuit of Happiness: It’s All About Experiences, Not Things

5 Ways to Feel Productive Before 9 A.M.

Winter Remedies

It’s impossible to get through winter without a few essentials. New York has actually has an extremely mild winter (aside from that record-breaking snowstorm!), but the humidity levels, temperature changes, and ancient radiators have been wreaking havoc on my skin and general well-being.

There’s a few things that have really helped make this winter a bit easier:

Cool Mist Humidifier

Oh my gosh – this little humidifier has worked absolute wonders on me. I had dry lips, dry skin, and a dry throat that were undoubtedly caused by my ambitious radiators, cold NYC wind, and general winter air. Once I started using a humidifier, I noticed an immediate difference in my breathing (especially at night) and my dry skin hasn’t been as itchy. I definitely recommend the Crane cool mist humidifier if you live in an apartment or house that doesn’t have a controllable heat setting (it truly helps cool down the room while adding some humidity!).

Hot Toddy

I only recently discovered the art and wonder of the hot toddy – nature’s gift to cold sufferers and winter drink connoisseurs everywhere. The drink is really simple to make: hot water, lemon juice, honey, cinnamon, and a splash of whiskey. I like to add black tea to mine, but it’s totally optional. A warm, boozy winter drink that can (maybe) cure a cold? I’m totally in.

St. Ives

It makes total sense that there’s a picture of a snowy mountain on St. Ives products – they’re total lifesavers in winter conditions! When Influenster asked me to try out these products for free in exchange for my review, I got pretty excited. I’ve always liked St. Ives products, but haven’t tried some of the more refreshing scents.

I’m particularly loyal to the plain-smelling St. Ives Vitamin E body lotion and have been using it for years, so I was hesitant to try the Pear Nectar & Soy body lotion… But it works just as well and smells amazing! It does feel a bit greasy right after application, but it soaks right into your skin within a minute or two. A winner in my book. The Pink Lemon & Mandarin body scrub smells amazing and really makes me feel clean. And I really love the Oatmeal Scrub + Mask – it works well on dry skin (especially dry patches) and makes my skin feel smooth and hydrated after using it (super important when the air is crazy dry!).

The best part of all about St. Ives? It’s one of the most affordable skin care brands out there that actually works. All three of these products can be bought for under $5.00. Win-win.

Heat Therapy

I’ve been using a heating pad on my upper back and neck every night before going to bed, and it’s been an absolute lifesaver. I never notice how much I tense up when it’s cold outside and I’m shivering… until after I’m back inside and my muscles have a chance to relax. Applying heat before bed not only helps my muscles relax, but it also helps calm me into a sleep-ready mood. Totally recommend if you have sore winter muscles!

What are your essentials that you use to cope through the winter months?

Me Before You Trailer

Remember when I wrote about this amazing book that I read called Me Before You? Well, the trailer for the movie is finally here!

When I first heard about the casting, I couldn’t really imagine Game of ThronesΒ actress Emilia Clarke in the role of quirky Lou, and Sam Claflin just seemed too young to play Will, the quadriplegic man Lou’s been assigned to take care of. But after seeing the trailer, I’m totally convinced that these two can pull it off and bring this touching love story to life.

Here’s the trailer:

The only super disappointing thing about this trailer is the news that the movie’s release has been pushed back to June 3. I guess we’ll just have to wait until then to lose all sense of emotional stability in a dark movie theater..!

3-month Catch-up

In some ways, I really can’t believe it’s been 3 months since I’ve written anything substantial. In other ways, these past three months have flown by.

It was a 2016 goal of mine to write more often… #fail. (And this is exactly why I don’t share my New Year’s resolutions!)

So much has happened over the last few months, but nothing too crazy or out of the ordinary! Just your basic, run-of-the-mill life activities.

I’ve had some improvements to my routine, and I’m excited to elaborate – and hope you can work some of my tips into your own busy lives! Here’s a sneak peek:

  1. I’m all settled in at my job (can you believe it’s been 6 months since I started a full-time position?!).
  2. I’m reading more than ever.
  3. I’m prioritizing sleep.
  4. I’m de-cluttering my closet.
  5. I’m taking time to reflect on goals and small joys.

Influenster also chose me to test and review some products from St. Ive’s – one of my favorite skincare brands! You can definitely expect a post on that pretty soon.

In the meantime… here’s a picture of Brownie, the world’s cutest dog:
