It’s sometimes not easy to know when we’re overexerting ourselves – and we may not notice until we’ve finally burnt out. While everyone’s signs of burnout are certainly different, here are my top three signs that I’m stretching myself too thin and need to slow down.
Not Making Enough (or any) Time to Read
This is, perhaps, the biggest sign that I’m not giving myself enough time, well, for myself. My first instinct is always “oh, I’m just in a reading rut.” But when I notice it’s taking longer than usual to get through a book, I have to ask myself what the reason may be. More often than not, my lack of reading stems from a lack of time I’m devoting to myself.
Not Eating Well
I’m never one to turn down sweets (it’s probably my worst vice!). But when I’m burning out, I find myself eating more and more sweets and less and less real food. Not only does it make me feel worse, but it’s a reminder that eating well gives our bodies the energy it needs to keep going and refuel and get balanced out.
Increase in Headaches
I get headaches probably 3-4 times per week, if not more. It’s not pleasant (and probably not normal), but it’s often a reminder (albeit, unpleasant!) that I need to slow down, get tuned-in to my body, and take care of myself. I don’t have the answers for preventing headaches (and, trust me, it’s not a dehydration issue!), but I do know they almost always get worse when I’m doing too much.
