2016 Oscars Countdown

Watching movies is one of my absolute favorite things to do, so it’s always a fun time of the year when the Academy Awards rolls around. While the talk of the town is Leonardo DiCaprio’s potential first Oscars win, I’m loving all the build-up to the actual event itself.

Kids Explain the Best Picture Nominees

Oh my word, this is too cute… and funny! I think it’s always interesting to hear a person’s summary of any film (everyone interprets so differently), but it’s particularly amusing when kids do it.

Kids Reenact Oscar-Nominated Films

In keeping with my cute-kids-do-the-Oscars theme, I can’t help but share these photos of kids reenacting  the Oscar-nominated films. Room and Mad Max: Fury Road are both so spot-on, and The Revenant is hilarious.

Where Does the Red Carpet Come From?

True or False: The red carpet dates back to almost 2,500 years ago… True!

Predicting What the Stars Will Wear

I know we’re not supposed to like the red carpet for the fashion anymore, but it’s possibly the prettiest and most glamorous part of the night. Can’t help but gush over some of these predictions (and wince at others – yikes).

Black Artists Matter

This is a bit of a longer read, but it’s worth the time – it’s very good and very important. In another year when artists of color were shut out of the major Oscars categories, it’s time to stop asking what’s wrong with the Academy and start asking what’s wrong with the industry.

#SmartGirlsAsk and #AskHerMore

I love red carpet fashion, but I also love the broader dialogue that #SmartGirlsAsk and #AskHerMore are creating about asking more meaningful questions on the red carpet (though, IMHO, some of the questions could be better focused on the topic at hand: film and entertainment). To help prep you for Oscars Sunday, you can watch answers to past #SmartGirlsAsk questions for the 2016 Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Emmys.

Will you be watching? What’s your favorite part of the Oscars?

My name is Jenny. I’m a 20-something Midwest transplant living on the Upper West Side of New York City. I recently graduated with my MA in Arts Administration from New York University and I also have a BA in Advertising and Media Studies from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Charla Feliz means “Happy Talk” in Spanish and is inspired by the song of the same name from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical masterpiece South Pacific (my favorite musical!). I aim to fill CF with nothing but good vibes. ✌️ I have interests in the arts, food, style, pop culture, and urban living – and you can expect to find some of those within the pages of CF.
